Academy
At Portimão Surf Clube, bodyboarding isn’t just a class — it’s a core part of our wave culture. Our PTMSC Bodyboard Academy is driven by passionate local experts who have shaped this sport in the Algarve for years. Champion bodyboarders like Filipe Costa and Sandro Nóbrega lead coaching and training programmes, and have been central to building a thriving bodyboard community here.
Located on the famed waves of Praia da Rocha and Praia do Vau, Portimão offers consistent beach breaks that are ideal for riders of all levels — from complete beginners to advanced challengers. The variety and quality of the surf conditions make it one of Portugal’s most rewarding places to experience bodyboarding.

We run regular structured classes designed to help athletes start young (from around five years old) and progress through technique, wave awareness, board control, and competitive strategy. Training is complemented by functional movement coaching and sport-specific conditioning, all delivered in a supportive and motivating environment.
Portimão Surf Clube also plays an active role on the bodyboard competition stage. Each season we host major events such as the National Bodyboard Esperanças Circuit, which brings together young talents from across Portugal to compete on the waves of Praia do Vau — reinforcing our reputation as a hub for developing future champions.
Classes and sessions take place right on the beach, with all necessary equipment and insurance included, and our team is always on hand to ensure safety, progression, and fun in the water.

Bodyboard History
Bodyboarding emerged in the late 1970s, inspired by the desire to ride waves closer to their most powerful and technical sections. Using smaller, more flexible boards, riders quickly began exploring shallow reefs, hollow beach breaks, and fast shorebreaks that traditional surfboards could not fully exploit. What started as an alternative quickly evolved into a highly progressive discipline, defined by speed, control, and aerial maneuvers. Today, bodyboarding is practiced worldwide, with a rich competitive circuit and a strong culture rooted in ocean knowledge and wave mastery.
In Portimão, bodyboarding has long been part of the local wave-riding identity. The powerful beach breaks of Praia da Rocha and nearby coastlines have shaped generations of riders, offering ideal conditions for learning, progression, and high-level performance. These waves helped establish Portimão as one of the Algarve’s most consistent and respected bodyboarding hubs, attracting both local talent and visiting athletes over the years.
Throughout the decades, the bodyboarding community in Portimão has grown through shared sessions, local events, and a strong club culture that values both performance and respect for the ocean. Younger riders naturally learn alongside more experienced bodyboarders, passing down technique, wave knowledge, and the unique spirit of the sport.
Today, bodyboarding in Portimão continues to evolve—firmly connected to its history, shaped by its waves, and driven by a community that keeps the sport active, inclusive, and deeply tied to the sea.
